The Grand National
The Crabbies Grand National will be held at Aintree on the 9th of April 2016 with a start time 5.15. The gruelling four and a half miles of turf, hedges and water jumps always spring some surprises and there are usually a few big winners! In 2015 the bookies lost a packet with flocks of punters backing Many Clouds from the Oliver Sherwood stable, a 11/10 shot ridden again by Leighton Aspell who was the winner in 2014 on Pineau de Re. It could it happen again this year with your hot tip winning?!!
Race Horses
The 2016 Grand National weekend will be held on the 7th, 8th and 9th April at Aintree on Merseyside. 7th is Liverpool or Grand Opening Day, 8th is Ladies Day and 9th is the main event - the Grand National Steeple Chase itself. For riders and owners there is now a £1,000,000 prize pot to get excited about! Last year there was a record of over 150 entrants, remember only 40 will be chosen for the race itself.
Since the first Grand National was held in 1829 at Aintree there have been many well-known owners to win the famous steeplechase including members of the Royal family, TV stars and tycoons. A full upgrading of the stands and enclosures was completed in 2007 at a cost of £30 million including the Queen Mother and Tattersall stands.
The most famous race in the world was won last year by Many Clouds ridden of course by Leighton Aspell and trained by Oliver Sherwood. Previous winners include: Pineau de Re in 2014, Auroras Encore in 2013, Neptune Collonges in 2012, Ballabriggs in 2011 Don't Push It in 2010 Mon Momein 2009 COMPLY OR DIE in 2008, Silver Birch in 2007 NUMBERSIXVALVERDE in 2006, Hedgehunter in 2005, Amberleigh House in 2004, Monty's Pass in 2003 and Bindaree in 2002.
Top runners in 2016 include:
Many Clouds, The Last Samuri, Goonyella, Shutthefrontdoor, Unionista and Silviniaco Conti amongst others.
